Absolutely fantastic, barmen were unbelievable, and the drinks, don't even get me started on how much I loved them. 🔥

What better way to conclude 2025 than at a proper cocktail and music bar. Batanga is a new addition to Kloof Street, yet it already feels established. It’s stylish without being intimidating and certainly not a trend chaser, honestly, it feels like it’s in a league of its own. As I walked in, I immediately felt hotter than I did outside, and I’m not talking about the temperature. The space is sleek, dark, and self assured. I swear it was trying to seduce me. There are two seating areas, each with a personality of its own. The courtyard style space is open air yet still cocooned, making it perfectly suited for a day to night transition, ideal for earlier evenings or longer catch ups. Then there’s the lounge and bar area, my personal favourite. Plush, intimate seating makes it perfect for people watching and late night conversations where secrets naturally surface. Batanga knows it’s attractive, and it definitely has the personality to match. And of course, nothing says “main character” without a banging playlist. Once we’d settled in and familiarised ourselves with the menu, we were greeted by our waitress, friendly, relaxed, and genuinely warm. It’s always refreshing to feel seen and not rushed in a nightlife setting. The music was set at exactly the right volume too, adding to the mood rather than stealing it. Our first round of drinks arrived and I knew I’d made the right decision. The cucumber and elderflower South Side looked clean and quietly pretty. Crisp, light, and dangerously drinkable, there was a moment I forgot it was alcoholic altogether. Dangerous, but in the best way. Either my first few sips went straight to my head or the kitchen operates like an orchestra, because I swear our food landed just as the beat dropped. In true conductor fashion, I reached for my baton, aka the prego chicken skewer, and dragged it through the cream cheese it was resting on. Perfectly spiced, juicy, and flavour forward, with the cool tangy sauce balancing everything out. Easy to eat, hard to stop. The mushroom faux gras proved that vegan doesn’t mean boring, not even close. Deeply umami, silky, and rich without being heavy, served in a build your own bite situation that made every mouthful fun. Crunchy sourdough, creamy parfait, and little pops of acidity from the pickled mushrooms kept things interesting throughout. With the lights dimming and the music humming, another round of cocktails felt necessary. The Morning Smash fit the room perfectly, softly citrusy, subtly sweet, lightly bitter, and incredibly well balanced. No harsh edges anywhere. Well behaved, but still fun. Do you know what’s even better than being white girl wasted? Being white girl wasted with a spread of food in front of you. I started with the steak, seared properly, tender in that “don’t talk while chewing” way. Dunked in the glistening chimichurri, it was garlicky, fresh, and full of flavour. The thin, crispy chips soaked up all the meat juices beautifully. Comfort without sloppiness. We finished with the broccolini, which looked styled rather than airbrushed, intentional, not overworked. Vibrant, perfectly cooked, with labneh underneath cooling and balancing the chilli crunch. Balanced without feeling calculated, and scooping became part of the fun. Our final cocktail, the Fault Line, acted as the perfect liquid dessert. Full-on vacation energy without being cliche, fruity without the sugar rush, and brightened with just enough citrus. The coconut and vanilla foam was the star, silky, sweet, and utterly decadent. Indulgent enough to feel special, but balanced enough to order again. All in all, Batanga delivered on every front. Thoughtful food, genuinely enjoyable cocktails, and music that enhanced the experience rather than competing with it. Relaxed but considered, and very easy to stay longer than planned. I’d definitely go again without hesitation. Till next time, Batanga!
